Post Apostolic Age A.D. 90 - 140
Rise of Gnosticism and many other false teachers.
Greek Apologists Age A.D. 130 - 180
Many Greek converts begin to intermingle philosophy
in trying to make Christianity more "attractive" to
non-believers.
Old Catholic Age A.D. 170 - 325
A gradual blend of church and state. The basic concepts
of the trinity began to be formed. The baptismal formula
was changed by many to "the titles." Also infant baptism
and sprinkling were introduced for the first time.
Ecumenical Catholic Age A.D. 325 - 787
Roman Catholic Church officially formed. Idol worship
integrated with the Christian service. Many false doctrines
officially established including infant baptism, confirmation,
confession, transubstantiation, and the elevation of the Lord's
Supper to a salvational process.
Early Middle Ages A.D. 600 - 1100
Pope Gregory announces that church tradition is just as
important as scripture and that the opinions of popes are
just as important as the Word of God. The concepts of
purgatory, worship of saints, worship of angels, worship of
relics, and celibacy for priests and nuns are introduced.
Later Middle Ages A.D. 1100 - 1500
Many children and lay people killed in the "Crusades. The
Papal Inquisition was instituted that said anyone who did not
believe as the Roman Catholic Church believed was to be
killed. Many horrible instances of persecution and torture were
recorded and it also became illegal for the ordinary man to own
a copy of the Bible.
Protestant Reformation Age A.D. 1500 - 1700
Martin Luther takes a stand against the Catholic Church.
Groups such as Ulrich Zwingli and the Anabaptists are
formed and begin to search the scriptures for themselves.
Calvinism gains a stronghold in England.
Great Awakening Age A.D. 1700 - 1800
John Wesley forms the Methodists and Jonathan Edwards
begins preaching in America. The Moravians, Methodists,
and Baptists spread throughout America.
Second Awakening Age A.D. 1800 - 1900
"Campmeetings" and mighty moves of the Spirit of God
become common place in many Methodist and Baptist
churches. Preachers such as Charles Finney and Dwight
Moody begin to hold "revival meetings." The Holiness
Movement is formed.
Pentecostal Age A.D. 1900 - present
The Holy Ghost is poured out in Charles Parham's Bible
college. The revival spreads to Texas and California. The
ministerial organization, The General Council of the Assemblies
of God, is formed. It splits two years later after heated debates
on the trinity/oneness of God and the correct way to be baptized.
Many new organizations formed that stress the original Apostolic
message of Acts 2:38!
