Scene 9

(Scene opens with tomb on one side and Peter and Mary Magdalene entering the other side. There is white cloth lying inside the tomb but no body. Mary Magdalene and Peter are arguing as they enter.)

Mary M.: Peter this is not crazy, He said that He would rise again!! Don’t you believe?

(Mary runs slightly ahead)

Peter: This is crazy. Mary, Mary Magdalene! Stop!

MaryM.: Why?

Peter: They have soldiers guarding the tomb and if you run up there and frighten them who knows...

MaryM: Peter, Jesus is not going to be there!!!

Peter: Now listen, I know that you believe that and your faith is good, but what if He hasn’t risen from the dead, you’re going to have everyone upset!

MaryM: I just know He’s alive (she takes off for the tomb) He hasn’t let me down yet!!!

(MaryM runs ahead to the tomb while Peter is still floor left walking slowly shaking his head sadly in unbelief. When Mary gets to the tomb she screams and stops just short of the tomb)

Peter: What? What is it? Is it the guards?

(MaryM is speechless. Peter now runs up to her)

Peter: What is it, Hey where’s the stone....? (Peter stops talking as he sees the empty tomb. He walks up to the tomb and reaches down and picks up the cloth in his hands)

MaryM: He’s alive!!! Oh Peter He is. He’s alive!!!!

(Peter slowly turns around to her, the cloth still in his hands. and says nothing)

(MaryM turns away from the tomb and hurriedly heads the other direction)

Peter: Wait, where are you going?

MaryM: Oh I’ve got to go tell Mary that her son is alive!!!!

Peter: Mary!!!! WAIT!!! You don’t know that!!!

MaryM: Then where is His body? Where are the guards?

Peter: What if His body is stolen by the guards? HuH? (Peter walks up to Mary)

Look I know, I want to believe too, but if He is alive then where is He? They are not going to believe you until we find His body!!

(Mary looks at him then speaks)

MaryM: Oh I hope he’s alive!

Peter: But what if He’s not!!!!

(Mary turns and leaves crying. Peter watches her go and then turns back and looks at the tomb, still holding the cloth in his hands. After a moment he speaks to himself)

Peter: He did say that in three days He would rebuild the temple...

(Peter turns and slowly begins to leave the scene staring down at the cloth and talking to himself)

Peter: Maybe He is alive, ...but then where are the guards... and where did He go? ...

(As Peter reaches other side of floor, Jesus walks up to stand a few paces from the tomb. After a brief pause Mary Magdalene re-enters the scene, weeping. She slowly walks with her head down and--not seeing Jesus-- stops in front of the tomb. After a brief moment Jesus--who is behind her-- speaks.)

Jesus: Why are you crying?

(Mary does not turn around but answers him assuming he is the gardner)

Mary: They have taken away my Lord and I don’t know where they have put Him.

Jesus: Who are you looking for?

(Mary turns and very distraught falls to her knees in front of Jesus, still not looking up at Him.)

Mary: I know you are only the gardner sir, but if you know where they have taken Him, please tell me so I can go get Him.

(Jesus looks down but does not touch her)

Jesus: Mary.

(Mary looks up at him and then suddenly realizes who he is)

Mary: Jesus!!!!

(Mary gets up suddenly as if to embrace Him)

Jesus: Stop! Don’t touch me for I have not yet ascended to my Father. Go and tell all of my disciples that I will meet with them in Jerusalem!

(Mary hesitates, and then takes off rather excitedly toward town. One spotlight follows her, while the other spots Jesus watching her go. As Mary leaves scene both spotlights go out, and the focus on song)
